Knicks’ Jalen Brunson gets brutally honest warning from Kevin Durant after winning first NBA title

The New York Knicks are still basking in the glow of winning their first NBA title in 53 years earlier this month, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games. The Knicks were led in that series by Jalen Brunson, who won Finals MVP honors after scoring 45 points in the closeout Game 5 on the road.

Recently, Brunson got a word of advice from Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant on how to move forward now that he’s reached the NBA mountaintop.

“I would tell him to strike while the iron’s hot. This is a time that I don’t think New Yorkers or the Knicks are going to get back. You’ve got to take advantage of this time right now, you don’t know if this will come around. It’s been 53 years. It could be another 53-year wait,” said Durant, per the Wall Street Journal on X, formerly Twitter.

The Knicks haven’t exactly seemed locked in on keeping this current core together next season, as James Dolan has already revealed that he will not be dipping into the second apron this offseason, meaning that backup center Mitchell Robinson, who played a huge role in New York’s championship run, will more than likely be suiting up for another team next year.

Of course, the Knicks will still have their elite starting lineup in place, led by Brunson, who became one of the few small guards throughout NBA history to lead his team to a championship this past year. The fact that New York is the reigning champs may also help convince some veterans in free agency to take a discount to sign there and chase a ring.

Still, the last team to repeat as champions was Durant’s Warriors in 2018, and it remains to be seen if the Knicks can break that curse.
