Kelsey Plum promises to be ‘shot out of cannon’ in Mercury home debut

PHOENIX– Kelsey Plum feels as ready as ever to play her first game in front of the Phoenix Mercury fans. After spending years playing against the fanbase, she now gets to have their support for the remainder of the season.

Originally, the past two weeks were thought to be Plum’s return from injury, but that never happened. And once the team was nearing the end of playoff contention, keeping her healthy was a priority.

Not to mention, she was dealing with a lingering calf issue that cost her substantial time when she was with the Los Angeles Sparks. Fast forward to when Plum made her Mercury debut; that same week she was injured again.

Is the injury truly that concerning?

For someone of her skill set, it can be. Her game is about getting downhill and to the rim, while being an extremely effective off-the-dribble shooter and playmaker. That extra burst can be the ultimate difference-maker.

Regardless, Plum doesn’t have any worries and actually feels the antithesis of any doubt.

“I feel extremely prepared; I’m as strong as I’ve ever been,” she explained during Tuesday’s shootaround. “I’ve never gone out there and played with any fear. If I had any fear, I probably wouldn’t be playing tonight.

“For me, I’ll play like I always played: getting shot out of a cannon. Hopefully you don’t notice any difference because I won’t.”

Kelsey Plum’s confidence is unmatched

There’s a fearlessness Plum plays with that the rest of the team can use. She consistently gets into the paint, as judging by the 56.3% of her points coming from that area, in addition to the 20.5% from the charity stripe.

However, she didn’t have another dynamic scorer like Kahleah Copper. The duo plays similar, yet extremely different. Plum has had to create a majority of her offense off the dribble and in the half court.

But on-court things aside, it doesn’t make the preparation any less difficult. Luckily, she’s been around the Phoenix practice facility for the past couple of weeks, which she said makes her feel more comfortable to play.

She’s had that mindset no matter what, as head coach Nate Tibbetts alluded to in weeks prior.

Physical preparation is one thing, but the mental is a completely different ball game.

“I’ve never been in a situation like this before,” she explained. “2020 was kind of an anomaly, but I think for me, I’ve learned a lot this year, and through it all I feel like it’s going to fare me well moving forward. Through it all, it’s brought me here, so I’m super grateful for that.

“At the end of the day, I know God’s always directed my steps, and this is no different, and so I’m just grateful to be able to come out tonight and play… sometimes you get the short end of the stick, and you’ve got to make the best of it.”

Mercury fans will be ecstatic for Kelsey Plum

The season hasn’t been what anyone anticipated, but there is a clear vision for the future. Despite Plum being set to become a free agent at the end of the season, the Mercury might be her No. 1 choice.

The extended time recovering, finally playing in front of the home crowd, as well as the FIBA World Cup, can mark the end of what would have been a tumultuous season and into a promising 2027.
