Sky’s Courtney Vandersloot hits incredible 3,000-assist milestone during loss to Sun

Courtney Vandersloot etched her name deeper into the WNBA record books on Tuesday night, becoming just the second player in league history to reach 3,000 career assists. The Chicago Sky legend hit the milestone during an 87-81 road loss to the Connecticut Sun, but the setback did little to diminish the historic nature of the achievement.

With the dime, Vandersloot joined Sue Bird as the only players ever to cross the 3,000-assist threshold. The all-time list underscores just how rarefied the company is: Bird sits atop the leaderboard at 3,234 assists, followed by Vandersloot at 3,000 and counting. Ticha Penicheiro ranks third with 2,599, Diana Taurasi fourth at 2,394, and Lindsay Whalen fifth with 2,345.

The milestone is all the more remarkable given the road Vandersloot traveled to reach it. The 37-year-old missed most of the 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL just seven games in, spending a grueling year in rehabilitation before returning to the floor in June 2026. She has embraced a shared point guard role this season alongside veteran Natasha Cloud, sacrificing some of her own numbers for the good of the team.

Even in a diminished offensive role, Vandersloot’s brilliance as a facilitator never faded. The 37-year-old has long been regarded as one of the greatest passers the women’s game has ever seen, a five-time All-Star who once averaged a league-record 10 assists per game in 2020. Her resume also includes two WNBA championships, both of which were the first titles in the respective histories of her teams.

The accomplishment adds another chapter to a career defined by generosity on the court. Vandersloot has always credited her teammates for her assist totals, pointing to the scorers who finished the plays she created. That selflessness has been the throughline of a Hall of Fame-caliber tenure, most of it spent in a Sky uniform, where she is also the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.

For a Chicago team well out of playoff contention at 15-24, nights like these offer something to celebrate beyond the standings. Vandersloot’s pursuit of Bird’s all-time record now becomes must-see viewing down the stretch.
