Eagles’ Lane Johnson injury scare brings dark cloud before preseason finale

With seemingly the entire City of Brotherly Love packed into Lincoln Financial Field for the Philadelphia Eagles’ open practice before their preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, clouds formed over South Philly when Lane Johnson exited the field early with trainers and moved to the sidelines during individual drills.

Taking to social media to break down what happened, ESPN’s Tim McManus revealed what he saw early and how it impacted the rest of Johnson’s practice.

“Eagles RT Lane Johnson is not currently participating in team drills after walking off the field earlier in practice with a trainer,” McManus wrote. “Johnson remains on the sideline in uniform, helmet in hand.”

While it is unclear how this assumed injury will impact Johnson for the rest of the month, as it’s not like he was expected to see snaps in the final preseason game of the summer, any missed time will hurt even more because there simply isn’t much left.

The Eagles’ first-round pick in 2013, Johnson announced earlier in the summer that he will most likely be calling it a career when the 2026 NFL season comes to an end, opting to focus on his family over another campaign with his Hall of Fame spot more or less locked up. Even if Markel Bell looks like the future of the position, and Johnson himself has handed the 6-foot-9 supersized Miami Hurricane his endorsement, No. 65 remains arguably the best right tackle in football and will be paramount in establishing Chris Kuper’s system after well over a decade with Jeff Stoutland running the show.
