R&B legend makes surprise pop-up on HBCU band

Southern University’s Human Jukebox got an unexpected visit from R&B royalty during a recent band practice.

Grammy Award-winning singer Bobby Brown surprised members of the Human Jukebox last week, stopping by as the iconic marching band prepared for another season of bringing its signature sound to the field. The surprise gave students a chance to meet the New Edition member and solo star whose career has helped shape R&B and pop music for decades.

Known for hits including “My Prerogative” and “Every Little Step,” Brown rose to fame as a member of New Edition before launching a successful solo career in the 1980s. His visit brought together two influential pieces of Black music culture, as the legendary performer spent time with one of the most celebrated marching bands in the HBCU community.

For members of the Human Jukebox, what started as another day of practice quickly turned into a memorable moment with a music legend.

Although his visit to the band was a surprise, Brown was already scheduled to be on Southern University’s campus. The singer was set to headline the Southern Jaguars Athletics Gala the following night, an annual event that raises money to support the university’s student-athletes and athletic programs.

During his visit, Brown listened as the Human Jukebox rehearsed before taking a moment to praise the students for their sound.

“I just want to say you guys sound amazing, and I’m glad I was able to bear witness to it,” Brown told the students.

With a career spanning nearly five decades, Brown has made a lasting impact not only on R&B but also on Black music and culture as a whole. Many of his solo hits, including “My Prerogative” and “Every Little Step,” along with songs from his time with New Edition, have become popular arrangements for HBCU marching bands across the country.

That connection made Brown’s visit to the Human Jukebox even more fitting. HBCU bands have long taken songs from influential Black artists and transformed them into powerful arrangements that introduce the music to new generations. Brown getting the opportunity to hear one of the culture’s most celebrated bands up close brought that relationship full circle.
