John Daly’s words of advice for PGA Tour-chasing son draw brutal response as home truths hit hard

When John Daly speaks, the golf world usually listens.

‘Long John’s’ legendary status in the sport was long summed up by a rather unique Masters tradition, which would see countless fans wait in line at a Hooters close to Augusta National.

Thousands would queue up just to meet the two-time Major champion, and absorb any words of wisdom he chose to share.

However, there is one person apparently not interested in his advice: Son John Daly II.

The 22-year-old recently made his PGA Tour debut at the Puerto Rico Open, where he was tied for the lead at one point.

Daly II later fell away and finished T-37, but certainly caught the eye on a course where his dad played six times.

“It’s awesome. This place has always been one of my favorites to come watch my dad play back in the day, so it’s pretty cool to make it to the weekend,” he said of his experience last month.

But while Daly II enjoyed watching his dad’s on-course exploits growing up, it seems he’s not too interested in taking any advice as he chases his own PGA Tour dream.

During a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast with Travis Kelce and his brother Jason, Daly revealed that his words of wisdom are only heard if they come from someone else’s mouth.

“He’ll listen to everybody but me,” the 1995 Open Championship winner said.

“It’s a father-son thing now. But if I see him doing something wrong — I watch him at a few tournaments — I’ll tell the coach.

“Little John will go, ‘Dad, coach really helped me.’ I say, ‘Okay, son. That’s part of their job… no problem.'”

Daly’s admission drew plenty of laughter from the Kelce brothers, and he went on to recall an amusing story that also involved Tiger Woods and his son Charlie at the PNC Championship.

“If Tiger and Charlie are playing, Charlie will listen to me,” he said.

“Little John will just listen to Tiger, but they won’t listen to their fathers.”

While it might sting, Daly’s struggle is one that dads around the world will be familiar with.

“It’s the way it works,” Jason suggested, after he recalled that Travis would ‘push back’ on advice from his parents back in the day.

“He never wanted to hear it.”

John Daly keeps Masters tradition alive despite losing Augusta base

While ‘Wild Thing’ hasn’t competed for a Green Jacket at Augusta National since 2006, he has long remained one of the big Masters attractions thanks to his meet and greets at a nearby Hooters.

In 2026, Daly was unable to set up shop at the restaurant, as it’s now been demolished.

Thankfully, the golf icon has found a new base, and spent last week at Top Dawg Tavern, meeting fans and selling his merchandise.

According to reports, he can make around $20,000 an hour on his lucrative annual pilgrimage, flogging T-shirts, hats, golf gloves and lighters.

While Little John might not be too keen to hear words of wisdom from dad, countless fans queue up just to get a word with Daly on Masters week, in a tradition that remains alive and well.
