Jason Kelce sends urgent warning about expanded NFL scheduling

Entering the 2026 season, the NFL has decided to expand their weekly schedule. There will be more football to watch than just on Thursday, Sunday and Monday.

The season opener between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will be on a Wednesday. There will be games on Friday and Saturday as well down the line as well. Legendary Philadelphia center Jason Kelce obviously loves football. But he is a bit concerned the NFL is going away from what he believes made the league great, via New Heights.

“Sunday is the NFL, and everybody sets their week around tuning in to the games happening on Sunday,” Kelce said. “I worry that we’re getting away from that just a little bit by building too much of this.”

The NFL has been synonymous with Sunday since essentially its inception. It also makes too much sense with high school football games played on Friday and college games on Saturday. The stage is then set for the highest level of football to be played with all eyes watching on Sunday. At the very least, it’s the schedule fans have gotten used to watching the league.

Still, it’s clear to see why the NFL would expand to being played on more days of the week. Rather than all the games being bunched up into one day, there would be more standalone windows and games. That’s more opportunities for the league to draw eyeballs and fit in advertisements.

Fans have already gotten used to Thursday and Monday Night Football. Still, Sunday reigns supreme when it comes to watching football. The NFL may be straying from that strategy, but Kelce hopes they don’t go too far.
