Giants’ Tony Vitello gets 100% real on brutal doubleheader vs. Phillies
The San Francisco Giants have struggled to find their footing in Tony Vitello’s first year as manager. Their Thursday doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies was no different.
San Francisco lost their first game 3-2 before dropping the second 6-5 in extra innings. Vitello kept things brutally honest about the pair of losses, via MLB.com.
“Obviously, not a good day,” Vitello said. “A lot of things you’d like to replay, redo. But you can’t do that. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, get on a plane and see what you can make of the rest of the road trip.”
After a loss in their first matchup of the three-game set, the doubleheader defeat means the Giants were swept by the Phillies. Vitello is already trying to look past the sweep and focus on the team’s upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
“Painful, certainly not mistake free,” the manager added. “Not much you can do about it at this point. Not an easy flight. Got to find a way to make the most of what we have left in this road trip.”
In game one of the doubleheader, San Francisco held a 2-1 lead all the way until the ninth inning. But then Ryan Walker gave up three hits and two runs in 0.2 of an inning to blow the save. In game two, the Giants and Phillies battled back and forth all game. San Fran took the lead in the top of the ninth, but Philly again battled back and earned the one-run victory in extras.
The Giants have high expectations for Vitello’s tenure. But it has gotten out to a 13-18 start. He’s hopeful his team will turn things around sooner rather than later.
