Chargers’ Keaton Mitchell flashes during training camp, but not at RB

Keaton Mitchell is battling for the Chargers’ No. 2 running back job, but one of his biggest highlights from Thursday’s training camp practice came while lined up somewhere else.

According to Chargers/NFL beat writer Daniel Popper at The Athletic, Mitchell showcased his versatility by making an impressive play as a receiver before later flashing the speed that has made him an intriguing back.

“Running back Keaton Mitchell flashed Thursday in the passing and running games. On the opening play of seven-on-seven, Mitchell was aligned as a receiver and beat cornerback Eric Rogers on a go route down the left sideline. Herbert threw a perfect ball to Mitchell’s outside shoulder, and Mitchell made the catch in bounds with little room to operate. Later in practice, Mitchell showed off his speed as a runner, getting to the edge on an outside rush to the right.”

That’s exactly the type of performance the Chargers were hoping to see. Mitchell is expected to compete with Kimani Vidal for the RB2 role behind rookie Omarion Hampton, but his receiving ability could separate him from the rest of the backfield.

New offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has always valued players who can line up all over the formation, and Mitchell appears to fit that mold. If he can consistently threaten defenses as both a runner and a pass catcher, he’ll force opposing coordinators into difficult matchup decisions.

Whether he ultimately wins the RB2 job or settles into a rotational role, Thursday’s practice showed the Chargers may have more than just another running back on their hands. They may have another versatile offensive weapon capable of making an impact in multiple ways throughout the 2026 season.
