Cowboys’ George Pickens responds to Jerry Jones’ ringing training camp endorsement

The Dallas Cowboys witnessed George Pickens put on a show in day one of NFL Training Camp. Even persuading head coach Brian Schottenheimer to send a “bad news” warning for NFL teams game planning for Pickens. Owner/general manager Jerry Jones dropped his own ringing endorsement.

“Make no mistake about it, George (Pickens) could be a Cowboy for the rest of his career, and that’d be a long time,” Jones told reporters on Tuesday.

Now Pickens addressed Jones’ words following Thursday’s practice at Oxnard.

“Super excited. I’m always super happy when someone thinks highly of me, so shout out to Jerry,” Pickens shared.

Pickens sounds energized and on the same page with the 2026 Cowboys. Especially after agreeing to the Cowboys’ franchise tag on July 15. Dallas and Jones will pay him $27.3 million for the one whole year.

But then comes locking in Pickens long term. He now enters, arguably, his most crucial season yet.

Pickens proved he was built for the Cowboys’ offense in hitting these career highs: 93 receptions, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. That production landed him the more than $27 million raise. Except now he’s entering a brand new contract year.

Matching or shattering his personal bests will reset the market for Pickens, even for Dallas. He’ll likely command a higher paycheck. Yet a decline in production could lower his value and potentially make it harder for the NFC East franchise to keep him.

So Pickens enters an even more scrutinized campaign. But he’s clearly all smiles and embracing the praise from the owner/GM who lured him in.
