Giants’ Rafael Devers has ‘no regrets’ on how things ended with Red Sox

Rafael Devers was supposed to be the next great Dominican slugger for the Boston Red Sox, and he quickly started to fulfill that promise by helping the franchise win the 2018 World Series and establishing himself as one of the most consistent hitters in the American League. The organization was incentivized to build trust with the former No. 11 after losing franchise greats and fan favorites Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. A 10-year, $300-plus-million contract seemed to consummate a long and healthy marriage.

Relationships can sour rather quickly, however. Miscommunication and pride marred what was a prosperous union and resulted in a June trade between the Red Sox and San Francisco Giants last season. Devers returned to Fenway Park for the first time since that extremely uncomfortable divorce, as his current club began a three-game series against his former one on Friday night.

He expressed appreciation for the fans, but those who were looking for a show of remorse will be sorely disappointed. When asked if he would change anything about his tenure in Boston, Devers responded with a simple “no,” per Tyler Milliken of the “Section 10 Podcast.”

The two-time Silver Slugger and three-time All-Star said that he thinks he has matured in the 14 months since the breakup, so perhaps Devers is grateful for everything he learned with the Red Sox. The Fenway Faithful are not so sympathetic, however.

Rafael Devers was greeted with a chorus of boos when he took his first at-bat of the evening. The crowd warmed up to him when the team unveiled its tribute video, but then it turned cold again when he came up to the plate in the third inning. Time heals most wounds, so maybe there will be a reconciliation period. Eventually.

Cracks formed when Boston moved Devers from third base to designated hitter in order to accommodate the incoming Alex Bregman ahead of the 2025 campaign. The star left-handed hitter had past discussions about being the long-term man at the hot corner and was visibly disgruntled. His dissatisfaction rose to alarming levels after the Red Sox tried to convince him to play first base in place of the injured Triston Casas.

Devers claimed that he was told to put his glove away and took clear shots at Chief Operating Officer Craig Breslow. The end became inevitable. He has played 117 games at first for the Giants, only adding to the fan base’s displeasure.

Both parties have moved forward, but old wounds can always resurface in a forced reunion setting. One has to assume that Devers got a great amount of satisfaction after smashing a 412-foot home run in the place he called home for roughly eight years.

The Red Sox hold a narrow 5-4 lead versus San Francisco in the fifth inning, at time of print.
