Giants’ Rafael Devers gets mixed reaction from Red Sox fans in Fenway Park return
The San Francisco Giants have been struggling badly throughout the season, and they have a 52-75 record heading into the home stretch of the season. That’s the second-worst record in the National League behind the Colorado Rockies. However, the Giants faced off against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park Friday in a meeting that was one of the most highly anticipated games of the day because it marked Rafael Devers’ return to Fenway Park.
Devers left the Red Sox in a controversial trade last season after he had been replaced at 3rd base by former Red Sox Alex Bregman. However, when the team asked him to play 1st base after an injury, he refused to do so. That led to his trade to the Giants.
Devers and the Red Sox had a meeting in San Francisco shortly after the trade, but he had not been back to play in Boston until Friday night. Red Sox fans gave him a mixed response when he came to bat in the first inning. While a number of fans stood and applauded their former slugger for his solid 9-year run with the Red Sox, it appeared that a greater number of fans booed him.
The Red Sox played a tribute video to Devers showing several of his highlights with the team and that was received quite a bit better than his first at bat.
Devers struck out in his first at bat against Red Sox hurler Sonny Gray. Devers has hammered 25 home runs and driven in 69 runs with the Giants this season while playing first base and designated hitter for the majority of the season.
