Red Wings acquire former 5th-round pick in trade with Predators

The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday acquired forward Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators in exchange for future considerations. The organization then signed Muzzatti to a two-year, entry-level contract, giving the the 23-year-old an opportunity to begin his professional career.

Nashville selected Muzzatti 143rd overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, but he remained unsigned and had yet to make his professional debut. The Predators were facing the possibility of losing his signing rights before the start of the regular season, leading to the trade with Detroit.

Muzzatti spent the 2025-26 season at Notre Dame after three seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 2022-25. He finished second on the Fighting Irish with 32 points and 19 assists while tying for second with 13 goals in 37 games. He also recorded 42 penalty minutes, three power-play goals, one shorthanded goal and 96 shots while posting a 13.5 shooting percentage.

Before transferring to Notre Dame, Muzzatti produced 50 points, including 19 goals and 31 assists, in 78 games at RPI. He also accumulated 129 penalty minutes during that span and was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team in 2022-23.

The Okemos, Michigan, native previously played two seasons for the Austin Bruins of the North American Hockey League from 2020-22. He logged 59 points, with 17 goals and 42 assists, across 80 games and added 100 penalty minutes. During the 2021-22 season, he led Austin with 46 points in 50 games. He also posted one assist in three postseason games.

Muzzatti is a product of the Meijer AAA hockey program in East Lansing, Michigan. He appeared in two games for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL during the 2019-20 season and scored one goal in his only appearance with the US National Team Development Program in 2020-21.

Muzzatti is also the son of Jason Muzzatti, who played 62 NHL games as a goaltender for the Calgary Flames, Hartford Whalers, New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks between 1993 and 1998.

The Wings’ acquisition brings the Michigan native aboard after he compiled 82 points in 115 college games at RPI and Notre Dame combined.
