Dodgers’ Edwin Díaz back to throwing after landing on IL

It has been a brutal season for Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz. While he is one of the best at his role when he is healthy, Diaz has battled multiple injuries in his first year with the Dodgers. He was placed on the 15-day Injured List with neck inflammation earlier this week, but he has already resumed throwing.

Diaz and Will Klein were playing catch in the outfield at Dodger Stadium today. That’s an indication that this stay on the Injured List will be a short one and at that he will be able to resume pitching for the Dodgers within a short period.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said earlier in the week that he hoped Diaz could resume pitching some time during the final month of the season, but the fact that is already throwing the ball is a positive sign.

The Dodgers were hoping that Diaz would take over as the team’s dynamic closer based on his previous experience, but his season has been torn apart by injuries and ineffectiveness. Diaz was on the Injured List in late April and he came back after elbow surgery in late July.

He has made 16 appearances this season while pitching 13.2 innings. Diaz has a shocking 11.85 earned run average while giving up 18 earned runs in 13.2 innings. He has allowed 3 home runs and 10 bases on balls.

Diaz is a 10-year veteran, having pitched 3 seasons with the Seattle Mariners before pitching 6 with the New York Mets. Diaz is a three-time All-Star. He had a 6-3 record last season with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves with the Mets last season.
