Inside look at NBA 2K27 gameplay, behind the scenes at 2K27 Community Day
LOS ANGELES — The 2026-27 NBA regular season is just around the corner, which means everyone will be locked into NBA 2K27 even sooner. The new game is set to release worldwide on September 4, 2026, with Early Access available on August 26th for players who get the Deluxe Edition and Ultra Edition.
As usual, before the game officially comes out, NBA 2K hosts an amazing Community Day for content creators and media to check out the game before it officially releases. This year, NBA 2K27 Community Day was held inside the LA Clippers’ Intuit Dome.
Before we get into Community Day and the overall experience, let’s first dive into my early impressions of NBA 2K27 having played it before almost everyone else can.
Playing NBA 2K27
In playing NBA 2K27, the first thing you’ll notice before the ball is even thrown up for tipoff is how much every player in every arena mimics the real life NBA.
For a lot of those who know me, I’m big on the aesthetically pleasing and visually appealing parts of the game. NBA 2K is the closest fans can get to experiencing the NBA through a video game, so for myself, the starting lineup introductions, the in-arena sounds, the crowd chants and reactions, the look of the hardwood, as well as the details in the jerseys are all pieces of a giant puzzle that make this game more and more fun for me each year.
I’m going to keep it real, the actual player graphics don’t look that much different to me from NBA 2K26 to NBA 2K27. The differentiating factors might be minuscule that they aren’t really even noticeable in gameplay. The bigger changes, in my opinion, came in the overall aesthetics of the game as well as the gameplay.
So let’s get to the actual gameplay.
NBA 2K27 Gameplay
In playing a Quick Game (NBA) during Community Day, it feels like overall speed has been reduced just a bit in this year’s game. With a bigger focus on each player’s signature moves and stylistic approach in addition to the improved defense, the game felt a tad slower to me. Now, that’s not to say it’s a bad thing at all. Instead, it actually felt like I had to make things happen using my teammates instead of just trying to isolate the CPU defender 1-on-1 to try and score. But I would like to play the game more before I decide how I truly feel about it.
The improvements made both to on-ball defense as a player and off-ball defense via the AI are quite clear as soon as you get into the game. Mike Wang, Gameplay Director for NBA 2K, highlighted it early in Community Day:
“Contests in general, we feel like are in a pretty good spot,” Wang explained Tuesday. “Interior scoring is going to be a little bit stronger, three-point shooting a little tougher. You’re getting stops when you’re supposed to get stops, so dood defenders are getting rewarded. We wanted to echo real life… We want people to stick to basketball fundamentals. Everyone always teaches you it’s really bad to jump on jump-shooters, but against elite shooters in the NBA, guys are leaving their feet all the time. People need to learn when the right time is to jump, when to stay down, when to just have hands up, but generally speaking, hands up is a lot stronger this year.”
As an offensive player, you’ve got a bit more work to do to try and score. It’s not at all impossible, but there is a bit more to scoring now, as mentioned, than just trying to isolate a defender or seeking out a mismatch/switch to score.
MyTeam
MyTeam is one of my personal favorite game modes because of the unlimited options at your disposal when it comes to building a team with your favorite players from different teams and different eras. One of the biggest additions this season is the ability to exchange any card you obtain.
“This year, we wanted you to feel like every card you pull feels like a win,” Evan Yang, Senior Manager of Global Community for NBA 2K, said during the Community Day live stream. “So for the first time ever, you can exchange any of your player cards. Even cards earned from season level rewards for powerful cards. Even when you complete a collection for a collection reward, those cards can still be used in the exchange.
“There will be a new premiere exchange that will feature one of the most powerful cards in MyTeam each season and these exchanges require cards of a certain gem tier. That means any card that meets the gem tier requirement qualifies, regardless of how you got it or who the player is. This is going to make sure that every card helps you improve your lineup.”
2K has also changed the gem tiers for player cards and their ratings to start NBA 2K27. Pink Diamond player cards are now 92 overall. Galaxy Opal player cards are now a 93 overall, and Dark Matter player cards are 94 overall.
I don’t personally mind these changes, especially as 2K adds more tiers to the game throughout the year. It makes the grind feel worth it a little bit more. 2K also added that Triple Threat Online and Clutch Time Online will be rotated into the lineup throughout the seasons.
As someone who frequents the MyTeam mode and oftentimes has a bunch of cards that are useless and irrelevant within a month, I’m intrigued at the possibility of so many more cards being made available to exchange at some point in the game for better ones.
Next I took a look at the MyPlayer Builder.
MyPlayer
As a casual gamer who loves to play quick games with friends or play MyTeam Offline because I’m nowhere near as good as some of the sweats on there, this was my first time really playing with the MyPlayer Builder to try and find out how I can make certain builds.
I’m not going to lie, it was very fun and simultaneously a little frustrating trying to create my player and find out how I can get certain player builds. As I tried to build different versions of the best wing, I repeatedly landed on present day LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard while also finding 2002-03 Paul Pierce, 2010-11 Andre Kirilenko, 2010-2011 Josh Smith, 1992-93 Larry Johnson, and All-Time Magic player Hedo Turkoglu. When I get to play again, I need to find the 2012-13 LeBron James build from his Miami Heat days.
From there, it was able equipping your favorite player’s dribbling moves, jump-shooting moves, scoring mvoves, as well as the best celebration emotes. This actually took me a while to play with because of the hundreds of player available to choose from and just how realistic each one looked.
Aside from the MyPlayer Build, NBA 2K introduced the new 2K HQ, a app for your phone that will allow you to build your player on the go and share with friends.
Also in NBA 2K27 MyPlayer? The ability to build a female player! Up until now, we’ve only been able to build male players, but 2K just changed the game by adding a WNBA builds and MyPlayers that a lot of fans are sure to love playing with.
MyCareer
The absolute best thing 2K added to the MyCareer portion of the game, at least in my opinion? MyCareer Eras!
Taking a page from the MyNBA mode, where you can play as different teams in five different eras, you can now take your MyPlayer, start a MyCareer, and jump back in time into different eras of basketball to see how your players stacks up against previous teams over the years.
— The Magic vs. Bird Era (1984)
— The Jordan Era (1991)
— The Kobe Era (2003)
— The LeBron Era (2010)
— The Steph Era (2016)
Each era will feature its own specific window of time, with rosters, rules, and presentation calibrated specifically to that time period. Additionally, each era will boast its own unique visual identity, from era-specific locker rooms and arena designs to score-bugs and broadcast unique to that era.
How many of your favorite teams in NBA history game this close to winning an NBA Championship, but were defeated by a legendary Michael Jordan Bulls’ team or a historic Kobe Bryant Lakers’ team? This will be gamers’ and fans’ chances to rewrite history and build a career for their MyPlayer.
NBA 2K27 Community Day In LA
NBA 2K27 Community Day kicked off with everyone arriving around 9AM PST. As soon as you step onto the Intuit Dome property, you’re greeted by the massive plaza board displaying this year’s three cover athletes: San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, and former Chicago Bulls star Derrick rose.
Everyone then all walked to seats in the lower bowl of Intuit Dome to watch a live stream of the latest updates to this year’s game, hosted by 2KTV’s Chris Manning and Alexis Morgan. Former WNBA player Chiney Ogwumike and Indiana Pavers star Tyrese Haliburton made appearances as 2K announced changes such as improved offensive moves mimicking NBA stars, a reworked defense that includes improved shot contesting and shot coverage, and an upgrade to one of my personal favorite additions: Rhythm Shooting.
One of the biggest additions to the game this year, however, are five new Eras to MyCareer, the ability to build a female MyPlayer, and a Co-Op My Career mode to play with a friend!
After that, everyone got to take the court to shoot around, take photos in the tunnel where the LA Clippers enter the court, and play the new NBA 2K27.
Before I could start testing the game out, however, 2K was kind enough to set me up with a couple of interviews. I was able to speak with Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown, Oklahoma City Thunder star Chet Holmgren, and San Antonio Spurs star Stephon Castle about their love of gaming, the new NBA 2K27, and how they feel about their ratings.
After speaking with the NBA stars, we had a quick lunch, which included Intuit Dome’s in-house sandwiches, pretzels, and a build your own waffle station before you get to the dessert station.
Only then did I finally enter Court B at Intuit Dome, meant to be a community court, where the 2K team had an incredible set up for content creators and press to play the all new NBA 2K27.
The game is in its final stages before release, so we didn’t get to play a completely finished version, but as mentioned above, I did get to play a number of different game modes and even took the court with LeBron James and the 76ers.
The 2K team hooked us up with an incredible gift package including a 2K backpack, a customized Community Day portable charger, a 20th Anniversary Gatorade/2K water bottle, and Community Day pins. They also had a setup outside Court B to create your own NBA 2K27 cover and MyTeam card, which I had to do.
We closed out the night with an amazing dinner back at the hotel in Century City. NBA 2K does it like no other and it’s why it is truly one of my favorite days of the year.
