Flyers’ Daniel Briere leaves door wide open for 21st overall pick trade

The Philadelphia Flyers have the No. 21 pick in this year’s NHL Draft, and there are several directions they can go in to improve their roster. One of those directions is trading the pick for a player, and it’s something that general manager Daniel Briere isn’t shy about doing.

“Absolutely,” Briere said via Kevin Kurz of The Athletic. “Everything is on the table. It has to make sense.”

For the Flyers, they know they’re not one player away from being contenders, which is why they wouldn’t trade the pick for a player who could only help them for a season or two. The best outcome for them trading the pick would be for a young player who could be a part of what they’re trying to build for the future.

“I’m not too keen on trading future first-round picks because you never know where it can go, and we’re not a Colorado or Carolina at this point, where you know you’re going to be finishing (high) and picking late first (round),” Briere said.

Now, in the event that they could land a star talent, they’d definitely be willing to move off of the pick and anything else they may have to give up.

The Flyers showed this past season that they have a solid foundation, and if they keep building the team, good things could happen for them as the years go by.

“All those draft picks that we’ve had in the past, we have to make room for them eventually. They have to play,” Briere said. “Having only four picks this year, I’m OK with because we’ve drafted so much the last few years.”
