Mercury’s Kelsey Plum trade makes insane WNBA history during career season

For the past few weeks, Kelsey Plum was the hottest name in the rumor mill as it was reported that she wouldn’t re-sign with the Los Angeles Sparks at the end of the season. That led to the organization trading her to the Phoenix Mercury, where she’ll be joining stars Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper.

With the trade, it makes WNBA history during the season, according to ESPN Insights.

“Kelsey Plum is averaging 23.9 PPG in 12 games this season. That is the most PPG at time of changing teams midseason with a minimum of 10 games played!” ESPN Insights wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Plum had been dealing with an injury for some time, but she is expected to make her return soon. That’s good news for the Mercury, as they try to make a playoff run for the remainder of the season. They’re currently 11-19 and are in 12th place in the standings.

Though Plum is on a new team, there is still a chance that she explores the free agent market during the offseason, according to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou.

“Plum, based on what I’ve heard, still intends to go about free agency at the end of this year or going into next season. Phoenix at this point would be within those conversations. There’s really no guarantee, but this is really a test run to see if Plum or the Mercury could be a long-term fit,” Philippou said on ESPN.

There probably is some sort of optimism from the Mercury that they’ll re-sign Plum, but it could all depend on how the rest of the season goes. Even if the Mercury don’t make the playoffs, if Plum, Thomas and Copper end up working out well together, next season will be the year they’re ready to all-in.
