Braves star Matt Olson backs pitching staff with possible trade reinforcements coming
The Atlanta Braves were unable to land Tarik Skubal in a trade from the Detroit Tigers. The team has made one move ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, as the Braves acquired Lane Thomas and Bailey Falter from the Kansas City Royals.
While the Braves did not get a top-quality pitcher, Matt Olson is not concerned, according to Jesus Cano of The Athletic.
“They’ve been great for us all year,” Matt Olson said of the Braves pitching staff. “Really, they’ve kept our offense in a ton of ball games. If we come out kind of slow, they give us a chance to work back and score late in some games. I feel like we’ve had a few of those. So they’ve been really good for us. Like I said, keep us in games, dominate some games. We’re really confident with those guys.”
Chris Sale has been great for the Braves so far this year. He is 12-6 on the year with a 2.08 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. Meanwhile, Bryce Elder has been solid as well, going 7-6 with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Overall, the Braves are seventh in team ERA, eighth in WHIP, and fifth in opponent batting average. Walt Weiss, the manager of the Braves, believes that the rotation and the bullpen are more than enough for the Braves to compete in the National League.
“I feel good keeping pace with anybody. Our pitching has been good. Guys have stepped up, and our bullpen’s been really good. It took a lot of innings, but they’re still strong. They’re still performing out there in the bullpen. So overall, we pitched well. Our starters have held their own and then some,” Weiss said.
The Braves are 67-45 on the year, which places them eight games in front of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. They are coming off a four-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, and begin a series with the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
