Florida A&M star Isaiah Knowles out for remainder of the season

Florida A&M star quarterback Isaiah Knowles will be out for the remainder of the season after suffering an injury during Sunday’s 31-13 Orange Blossom Classic matchup against South Carolina State. According to a report by the Tallahassee Democrat, Knowles suffered a broken thumb in the matchup. Backup quarterback Destin Fletcher entered the game as Knowles’ replacement.

Knowles spoke with HBCU Gameday’s Tolly Carr about what happens next for him following the injury and the impact he’s set to play on the team from the sidelines.

“While I’m here, I’m going to use this time to tap into the coaching mindset and continuing to be a leader for the guys. I know the offense like the back of my hand so I feel there’s an opportunity for me to still help my team. It’s my opportunity to get my foot in on what coaching is really like.”

Knowles’s injury is a crushing blow for Quinn Gray in his first season with the Rattlers, pasing a partnership that spanned four years. Knowles spent three seasons at Albany State under Gray, arriving as a Naval Academy transfer and immediately clicking with Gray’s pass-heavy scheme. He opened his career with 879 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 216 rushing yards over seven games in year one. Things escalated quickly from there.

His 2024 campaign brought 2,555 passing yards and 32 touchdowns, plus three rushing scores, and he rarely had an off night. The lone exception came against Fort Valley State, where he threw for just 150 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, the only time all season he finished below 200 yards. He flipped that script against Allen University, torching the defense for 372 yards and six touchdowns on 75% passing without turning the ball over.

Knowles saved his best for 2025, powering Albany State to a historic season. He passed for 2,151 yards and 18 touchdowns against just six interceptions while also rushing for 18 touchdowns on 285 yards. The Rams capped an undefeated Division II campaign with a SIAC Championship and a deep playoff run, and Knowles walked away with SIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. He transferred to Florida A&M weeks after Gray was named head coach and was officially named QB1 at the start of the season.
