Lakers hire ex-Heat VP as assistant general manager

The Los Angeles Lakers are adding another experienced executive to their front office, hiring longtime Miami Heat executive Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the move Wednesday on X, formerly known as Twitter. Amsler will join Rohan Ramadas as one of two assistant general managers working under Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka.

“The Los Angeles Lakers are hiring Miami Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager, sources tell ESPN. Amsler – who spent over 22 years in the Heat organization starting as an intern and working his way up in various scouting, personnel and G League roles – joins Rohan Ramadas as assistant GMs under president Rob Pelinka.”

Amsler brings more than two decades of experience from one of the NBA’s most stable organizations. He began his career with Miami as an intern before steadily moving through the organization and eventually becoming vice president of player personnel.

His tenure included work across several areas of basketball operations, including scouting, personnel and the G League. That experience now gives Pelinka another veteran voice as the Lakers continue reshaping their basketball operations.

Lakers continue adding to Rob Pelinka’s front office

The move follows previous reports that Los Angeles intended to expand its front office during the offseason. The organization was reportedly considering multiple additions, including an assistant general manager and another potential high-ranking position.

Amsler now fills one of those roles and arrives amid significant organizational change for the Lakers.

The franchise has undergone multiple changes to its business and basketball operations since the Buss family initially sold its controlling interest to Mark Walter in 2025. Walter subsequently agreed to sell the Lakers for a record $12.5 billion to Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger in August.

Despite the changes at the ownership level, Pelinka has remained in charge of the Lakers’ basketball operations and continues to shape the front office around him.

Amsler’s departure also represents the loss of a longtime executive for the Heat. Spending more than 22 years with one organization allowed him to gain experience across different levels of Miami’s basketball operation before reaching the vice president level.

Now, Amsler will bring that background to Los Angeles as the Lakers prepare for the 2026-27 season.

With training camp approaching and the regular season set to begin in October, his hiring gives the Lakers another experienced executive as Pelinka and the organization continue building out their revamped front office.
