Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. is headed to IL. Will Anthony Volpe replace him?

New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is dealing with a thumb injury. Ahead of Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies, manager Aaron Boone revealed that Chisholm will be placed on the injured list due to a sprained right thumb, Jorge Castillo of ESPN reports. It seems as if infielder Anthony Volpe — who has enjoyed some quality moments in the minor leagues in recent weeks — may be a candidate to replace Chisholm on the big league roster.

“Jazz Chisholm Jr. is going on the injured list with a sprained right thumb, per Aaron Boone. He’ll be shut down from baseball activities for the next 7-10 days. Boone said he just found out so he doesn’t know who will take his spot on the roster. Anthony Volpe is an option,” Castillo reported.

Losing Chisholm to the IL is far from ideal, but Volpe could help replace his production. It’s no secret that Volpe has struggled during his time at the big league level, but he is hitting .260 to go along with a .906 OPS and 11 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season. Volpe may be ready to return and make an impact with the Yankees.

As for Chisholm, it remains to be seen when he will return. The Yankees will re-evaluate the situation within the next week or two.

On Wednesday, New York will host Colorado for the second matchup of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees earned a 5-3 victory to begin the series on Tuesday. First pitch for Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET.
