Fever’s Sophie Cunningham sends message to fans after defeating Dream

The Indiana Fever returned to the win column after beating the Atlanta Dream, 83-71, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday. The Fever snapped a two-game skid to improve to 5-4.

The game was extra important for the Fever, who were coming off the heels of the much-ballyhooed spat between guard Caitlin Clark and coach Stephanie White in their loss to the Portland Fire. They dismissed the issue, chalking it up to the heat of the moment.

The Fever needed to show that they were united. So, that was exactly what they did against the Dream. They allowed their fewest points this season, while Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston took care of the offense. Sophina Cunningham, Raven Johnson, and Myisha Hines-Allen, meanwhile, provided energy off the bench.

After their victory, Cunningham expressed a sigh of relief to the fans.

Cunningham had eight points, including two three-pointers, and two rebounds.

Mitchell starred with 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting, two assists, and two steals. Clark had 17 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, while Boston tallied 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.

Indiana held Atlanta to just 34% from the field, including 6-of-21 from beyond the arc. Before the game, the Fever were allowing 89 points per game.

The Fever had a mini-run in the third quarter, led by Mitchell and Clark, to take control of the game. They maintained their stingy defense in the ensuing period, erecting a 14-point lead with 3:36 left. It was smooth sailing for the rest of the way.

Indiana will face the New York Liberty on Saturday.
