Even Donald Trump ‘wouldn’t pay’ $1,000 FIFA World Cup ticket price
With just weeks left for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the ticket prices for it don’t seem to be coming down. Ever since the ticket launch announcement, the price for this summer’s World Cup has been on the rise. A growing topic of controversy, USA President Donald Trump has now himself reacted to it and shared his voice on the matter.
Soccer is arguably one of the most-watched sports in the world, and the FIFA World Cup is the most-watched tournament. However, with the already strict visa restrictions and the presence of ICE near the stadiums, this year’s viewership has been debatable. But now with the rising prices and the tag of $1000 for a World Cup ticket, even President Trump expressed hesitation on purchasing it.
In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Trump was questioned about the cost of attending the USA’s opening group stage match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. With the cheapest ticket in FIFA’s three main pricing categories initially listed at $1,120, Trump shared a straightforward response.
“I did not know that number. I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay it either, to be honest with you. If people from Queens and Brooklyn and all of the people that love Donald Trump can’t go, I would be disappointed, but, you know, at the same time, it’s an amazing success,” Trump said. “I would like to be able to have the people that voted for me to be able to go.”
FIFA reacts to the complaints regarding World Cup ticket prices
However, while Trump agreed the prices were on the higher side, FIFA President Gianni Infantino believes them to be fairly priced. Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, Infantino said, “In reality, 25 percent of group stage tickets are available for less than $300,” he said. “In the U.S., you can’t attend a college game, let alone a top-tier professional event, for under $300. And this is the World Cup.” (via GiveMeSport)
