The Reds attempted to save money 

So far this season with the Reds, Suárez recorded a .208 batting average with 19 home runs and 57 RBIs, while Friedl has hit a .158 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 76 games. Rosenthal would say that the attempt to put the two on waivers was for the team to “save money,” though he predicted both would remain with the club, “unless the Reds move to cut ties by designating one or both for assignment.”

“Suárez, 35, is owed slightly less than $3 million for the rest of the season; Friedl, 31, slightly more than $700,000,” Rosenthal wrote. “Neither is expected back next season.”

It remains to be seen what the future of Suárez and Friedl looks like.
