Bills GM Brandon Beane reveals what really happened with failed in-division trade deadline deal

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane addressed the circumstances surrounding an unnamed in-division trade that failed to materialize before the 2025 NFL deadline.

WGR 550’s Sal Capaccio asked Beane during an interview Wednesday how far the negotiations had progressed. Capaccio also asked whether the Bills had a deal in place that the other team pulled away, or whether talks ever reached that point. Capaccio posted Beane’s response on X, formerly Twitter.

“In that context of last year, it was what was said to be what it would cost. Okay, it was a moving target, and ultimately, they were not willing to trade in division.”

Beane pointed to two problems: the stated price moved, and the other club would not complete a trade within the division. That account explains why the pursuit ended from Buffalo’s side. It does not resolve the proposed compensation or how close the sides came to an agreement.

Beane did not name the opposing team or the player. He also did not say the Bills had completed an agreement that the other team later withdrew. His wording shows Buffalo worked from a stated price, then watched that price move as talks continued.

Beane’s distinction matters when assessing Buffalo’s unsuccessful deadline pursuit. A changing asking price does not necessarily mean both teams had accepted the same terms. Likewise, discussions that advanced significantly would not constitute a completed trade without final approval from both organizations.
