Ken Rosenthal reveals new information about Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte drama

The Arizona Diamondbacks are likely to have infielder Ketel Marte back on the active roster Monday when he is eligible to come off the injured list.

Shortly before he disappeared, Ketel Marte told some teammates that he felt like he wasn't needed, @Ken_Rosenthal was told.

Marte left the Diamondbacks earlier in August when the team started a series in Boston against the Red Sox. The Diamondbacks placed him on the Restricted List when he was a no-show Aug. 17 at Fenway Park. Manager Torey Lovullo has been a big supporter of Marte, but he was clearly disappointed when the three-time All-Star didn’t show up and he couldn’t put his name in the lineup.

That apparently will change Aug. 31 when the Diamondbacks host the Phillies. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal explained that the player’s absence was keyed by Marte’s feeling that the team did not need him while he was recovering — and still playing — from a knee injury.

Rosenthal explained that Marte will feel somewhat down about his play as a season is progressing and that led to his absence.

He has since spoken with Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen and both apologized and tried to explain his actions. The Diamondbacks responded by moving him from the Restricted List to the Injured List.

Marte is one of the best second baseman in Major League Baseball and an elite player on the Diamondbacks. He will make their lineup better and more effective as the team fights for a National League Wild Card playoff spot in the final weeks of the season.

Marte is slashing .249/.314/.446 this season, and while those numbers are down compared to the last three seasons, he has hit 21 home runs and driven in 67 runs.
