Steelers rumors: Adam Schefter provides Joey Porter Jr. update

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. have still not come together on a new deal, and the cornerback will continue to sit on the sidelines until something is done. The latest update from ESPN’s Adam Schefter is that both sides are not close on a number, which means this could get dragged out for some time.

“They haven’t appeared to be close either to a deal, and they’ve never gotten close, and he’s still not practicing,
Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show. “He’s on PUP with a back injury, and backs are often confused with contractitis. They’re waiting on him, and he’s waiting on them, and that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. I want to point out, we’re headed into what is always a very interesting weekend, where teams go from 90 to 53, and there are trades made, a lot of trades of people rounding out their roster.

“Could the Steelers get an offer that would be enough to make them think about trading Joey Porter Jr., and who would that be? Who would be willing to give up what it takes to get the player and pay the player? There aren’t a lot of people that could do that this time of the year.”

Porter has been in trade rumors over the past few weeks, but someone has to want him. What makes it even more difficult is that someone has to pay him the money he wants, and as Schefter said, most teams’ resources are cut short during this period.

That leaves the Steelers in a position where they may just need to find common ground with Porter. He’s their best corner, and his stats prove that he deserves to get paid, but it looks like the Steelers are offering less than what he desires.
