Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong’s fiery rant calling out umps shows he doesn’t care at all they admitted to mistake

The Chicago Cubs were looking to take the series over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. They ended up falling in the game, 2-0. Still, the drama of the game happened in the sixth inning, as Pete Crow-Armstrong sat on third base in the sixth inning. After a catcher’s balk was not called, Crow-Armstrong was irate and had to be held back.

PCA was leading off third base with the game still tied 0-0. Eduardo Rodriguez was winding up to throw a pitch to Michael Busch when he saw PCA break for home. Rodriguez stepped off the rubber and threw home to catcher James McCann. It was ruled a legal pitch, instead of a balk, which would have scored Crow-Armstrong. This led to the confrontation. Home plate umpire and crew chief Alfonso Marquez gathered the umpires and agreed they did not see an infraction, but admitted to the mistake, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“We just didn’t see it,’’ Marquez said. “We just didn’t see it. After looking at the video, it looked like he stepped off.’’

PCA did not care about the explanation.

“No, it doesn’t make me feel any better,’’ Crow-Armstrong said, “that they admitted that they missed the call. They had as much time as they wanted to talk about it on the field, so they should have admitted that right after they got it wrong.’”

Crow-Armstrong was even more irate discussing the call after the fact, even as he had to be held back during the game.

“I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play,’’ Crow-Armstrong said. “They’re out there every day like we are. Their one job is to get calls right, and if they get it wrong, they’re supposed to talk about it, figure it out, and get it right. And they didn’t. I don’t know how you miss somebody starting their motion and then stopping it and stepping off. I just don’t know.’

Still, the potential MVP realized he should have kept his cool, and some of the frustration of a bad series at the plate also came out.

“So, if I’m going to sit here and [complain] about all this stuff,’’ he said, “I should have done better today. Shouldn’t have punched out three times. I should have had better at-bats all series. I was pretty non-existent. So, I think you guys just saw my frustrations from the last three days kind of come out.’’

The Cubs are now 76-58 on the season, which places them in second place in the NL Central. They are also 6.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the division. They control the top wild card spot in the National League. The Cubs open a series with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
