Even Broncos’ Sean Payton is ready to go play college football amid eligibility madness

The Denver Broncos are looking to head into the new season on a positive note as they take on the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason finale on Friday at Empower Field at Mile High.

The Broncos split their first two preseason assignments against the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Sean Payton said they take every game seriously as part of the culture they have built in Denver.

Payton, however, was in a joking mood when he was asked for his thoughts about the changes in eligibility rules in the NCAA, which have allowed some players who spent time in NFL training camps to return to college football.

DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens said Payton made a tongue-in-cheek remark about attempting to give it the old college try himself.

“I asked. But I can’t move well enough,” quipped Payton.

Payton would have been a fantastic backup quarterback.

The 62-year-old coach was a signal-caller at Eastern Illinois in the 1980s. He logged over 9,600 yards in his three-year career with the Panthers. He held 14 school records and was a two-time Honorable Mention All-American and a two-time First-Team All-Conference.

After going undrafted in 1987, he was signed by the Chicago Bears, appearing in three games.

There has been a growing trend of players returning to college football after participating in NFL training camps. Among them are Dae’Quan Wright (Cleveland Browns), Zxavian Harris (New Orleans Saints), Wydett Williams Jr. (Arizona Cardinals), Jack Pyburn (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and Cole Hutson (Browns and Dallas Cowboys), just to name a few.

While Payton has kept tabs on the matter, he is more focused on his fourth year with the Broncos, whom he led to the AFC Championship Game last season.
