Coventry transfer reignited just days after deal for highly-rated teenager collapsed

Coventry’s loan move for Manchester City defender Stephen Mfuni is back on, talkSPORT understands.

The Sky Blues had backed away from completing the deal, with Man City subsequently holding talks with Championship clubs Sheffield United and Swansea.

But the 18-year-old might yet end the transfer window as a Coventry player.

Mfuni’s story so far

At City from Under-9 level, Mfuni starred in the club’s 2023/24 FA Youth Cup triumph, scoring against Leeds in the final.

He made his first-team debut as a half-time substitute in January’s 10-1 FA Cup demolition of Exeter.

Ahead of that milestone moment, Mfuni said of having the opportunity to work with then City boss Pep Guardiola: “Working with Pep? He opened my mind; he sees things I didn’t see before.”

Mfuni joined Watford on loan for the rest of the 2025/26 season, making eight Championship appearances for the Hornets.

A versatile player, he can operate at centre-back or left-back and is naturally left-footed.

Mfuni has represented England up to Under-19 level.

He started al three of the Three Lions’ games at last year’s European Under-19 Championship in Romania.

Mfuni could be the latest of many new arrivals at Coventry, back in the Premier League after 25 years away.

Coventry’s busy transfer window

The Sky Blues have made nine signings this summer, breaking their transfer record multiple times.

Experienced centre-back Ethan Pinnock is the latest new face at the Coventry Building Society Arena, completing an initial £5m switch from Brentford earlier this week.

Manager Frank Lampard had said before Coventry’s season-opening defeat away to Arsenal that the club would be ‘analysing how the squad is looking’ with the transfer deadline coming up next Tuesday (September 1).

“We have tried to strike the balance of working strategically to add to what we already had,” he explained.

“We know the level goes up, so we’re trying to work to make ourselves competitive at the level and we’ll analyse over the next two weeks how the squad’s looking.”

Next up for Lampard and co.

Having beaten Plymouth 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday – with recent signing Taiwo Awoniyi among the goalscorers – Coventry are preparing for their first home game of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign against fellow newly promoted side Hull.

They then travel to Man City before hosting local rivals Aston Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
