Key College GameDay figure removed and replaced as Pat McAfee friction leads to major ESPN shakeup

College football is back this weekend as the 2026 season gets underway, which means the return of ESPN’s College GameDay.

Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban will be back for the 40th season of ESPN’s flagship Saturday morning college football pre-game show.

College GameDay will be in Baton Rouge on September 5 during Week 1 of the 2026 season to cover a clash between Clemson and LSU, the latter of which is coached by Lane Kiffin, who has recently sparked NFL Draft chaos.

However, the Week 1 crew will be without a familiar face, as one of the lead producers has been taken off the show.

College GameDay undergoes shakeup ahead of 2026 season

Awful Announcing reports that lead producer Jim Gaiero has been removed and instantly replaced by Matthew Garrett, the vice president of production at ESPN.

According to the outlet, the plan is for Gaiero to have a new role at ESPN.

“Gaiero’s role at ESPN is expected to shift to help deepen the network’s college football event producer bench,” Awful Announcing report.

“He’s also expected to take a significant role on ESPN’s production prep for the network’s Super Bowl in February, where he’ll conntribute to pregame studio programming.

“Gaiero has been with ESPN for over 30 years, joining the network in 1995. In addition to his GameDay role, Gaiero produces college football and basketball games for ESPN, along with NBA Draft and PGA Championship coverage.

“Previously, Gaiero was a lead producer on ESPN’s NASCAR coverage until the network lost rights to the motorsport in 2014.”

However, there is more to the story, as apparently the move has not gone over well with former Alabama head coach Saban, who has a close relationship with Gaiero.

Furthermore, there are suggestions that friction with McAfee is what also led to Gaiero being moved.

Awful Announcing points to social media comments made by McAfee in October 2025 where he claimed that “old white people at ESPN hate him”.

“But throughout the entirety, old whites and the old ESPN people over the last like three years have really hated me. That’s who all the producers are of GameDay too,” McAfee posted at the time.

According to the publication, multiple sources told them that those comments from McAfee were targeted Gaiero and Garrett, with one source saying, “He was absolutely talking about Jim and Matthew Garrett. That isn’t up for debate.”

McAfee has become one of ESPN’s biggest stars since joining College GameDay in 2022.

A year later, the former punter-turned-broadcaster brought his eponymous The Pat McAfee Show to ESPN, ESPN+, and YouTube under a multiyear agreement.

Since then he has taken over ESPN and, alongside Stephen A. Smith, become the face of the network.

He recently landed a new job alongside Jason Kelce and will take a key role in NFL coverage this season, ahead of the network’s first-ever Super Bowl broadcast.

The move comes amid ongoing contract extension talks for a deal that would pay the former Indianapolis Colt as much as $65 million per year.
