England legend hints at unusual punishment for Bryson Carse after being handcuffed by police

Mike Gatting believes that Brydon Carse could have to sit out a year of Test cricket after he was handcuffed on a night out.

The England fast bowler was led away by police in Derby after an incident at a nightclub.

Teammate Matthew Potts was pictured trying to talk to him, while former England captain Ben Stokes was also out.

Carse was picked for the Test squad to face Pakistan in the second match of the series, but he has since been dropped.

Captain Joe Root revealed he was, ‘hacked off’ after Carse was led away by police.

And Gatting believes that a severe punishment for Carse might be the way forward.

The England legend doesn’t name him, but he refers to Eoin Morgan’s decision to drop Alex Hales ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

Speaking to Max Rushden and Charlie Baker on Hawksbee and Jacobs, the former captain said: “It is very disappointing for everybody concerned.

“Eoin Morgan told a certain person to have a break for a year and see if they could come back and hit the required standards.”

On Root’s reaction, he added: “I think he made it very clear in his interview that he was ‘hacked off’ and I would have been too because everything he tried to start afresh…

“They won a Test match, played well, and all of a sudden, something totally outside has happened, and he’s spoken to everyone that was part of that group, and they disregarded it and ended up where they did.

“It is just very sad – I can’t say anymore than that. As a captain, you have no other option but to ask the guys to be sensible.

“If they aren’t, perhaps they don’t deserve to be in the team, and that is something I am certain they are looking at.”

But Gatting doesn’t want the players not to celebrate – because Test cricket is hard.

“When you win a Test match, it is time to celebrate,” he added.

“When you are away on tour, you do get a chance to enjoy the win and enjoy what you are doing.

“I would have thought, you would want to be altogether when you are celebrating a win.

“We all make mistakes, but some of them need to understand what is required.”

What happened with Hales and Morgan?

Ahead of England winning the 2019 One Day International World Cup on home soil, Hales failed a drugs test.

He was handed a 21-day ban, but Morgan responded by throwing him out of the squad.

And in a withering assessment, Morgan destroyed Hales.

He said: “We’ve worked extremely hard on our culture in the last 18 months since the Bristol incident [Hales and Stokes having a fight with the general public].

“It really did open our eyes to ourselves, not just being judged as performers but how we are as role models.

“We have been working on it to try and find values that everybody across all three formats can adhere to and those values have been in place the past six months.

“Unfortunately, Alex’s actions have shown complete disregard for those values. This has created a lack of trust between Alex and the team.”

Hales did return to the one-day setup under Morgan later in his career.

What did Root say?

Speaking ahead of the second Test getting underway, Root said: “If I’m being brutally honest, I’m really hacked off, I’m really disappointed.

“I’ve spoken to Brydon, and when I first found out my main concern was him as a person.

“I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn by saying he’s very upset, very apologetic and understands his actions. I’m sure that when he gets his chance he will say that himself.

“But I don’t think it’s the isolated incident itself, it’s the fact we keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it’s detracting from what we’re doing on the field.”

Another one

This is the latest in a long line of incidents involving drinking and the England Test team.

Harry Brook was involved in an altercation with a bouncer late last year.

During The Ashes, the team’s trip to Noosa essentially became a stag-do, and earlier this summer, Stokes and Gus Atkinson were also involved in an incident with a Saracens rugby player.
