NFL announces ‘yellow card’ rule change that can result in immediate suspension for superstars

The National Football League is borrowing a key rule change from soccer’s playbook.

In an attempt to clean up the NFL and remove the dirtiest plays from the sport, the league and the player association announced on Wednesday several rule changes that could lead to an immediate one-game suspension.

Greater emphasis will be placed upon five fouls for the upcoming 2026 season, which kicks off on September 9 with a Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Hip drop tackles, horse collars, launching, hits on defenseless players and blindside blocks will receive extra scrutiny from referees this season.

According to a joint statement from the NFL and NFLPA, a player who commits three violations during a season will be suspended for one game.

That is similar to soccer’s yellow card system, which often sees a player who receives two yellow cards in one match be suspended for the next contest.

There are varieties of soccer’s yellow card rules across different leagues and competitions.

But the overall emphasis is upon decreasing on-field violence and cleaning up the action between the lines.

Fans were split on the new NFL rule changes, with some praising the league and NFLPA for attempting to clean up the sport, but others insisting that the changes were continuing to remove athleticism from an inherently aggressive game.

“So they’re going to be penalized for playing football? Got it,” one fan tweeted.

“Are they still going to fine players for hip-drop tackles even if they never call one?” a second fan posted.

There was also a potential reward included in the new 2026 rule changes.

If a player is fined for one of the five emphasized violations during the season and avoids further flags, the athlete will receive 50 percent of their initial fine back after the end of the campaign.

The NFL and NFLPA also announced that teams with excessive health and safety violations will be fined.

Ron Rivera, a Super Bowl champion defender and 13-year NFL head coach, will also join a group of former players who hear appeals for health and safety violations.

The NFL continually adapts its rules and has been attempting to decrease hip-drop and horse-collar tackles for years.

The legalization of the forward pass, illegal defensive contact and two-point conversion have been among the biggest rule changes in NFL history.

But the current emphasis is upon player safety, with the NFL attempting to protect offensive and defensive players at the same time.
