City’s Governor puts foot down on $8.3bn NFL team’s future amid stadium relocation fears
Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, is ageing, but talks of a possible relocation across state lines have been shut down.
The home of the 2024 Super Bowl champions opened in 2003 and cost $512 million to construct.
The lease expires at the end of the 2032 NFL season, and at a time where three NFL franchises are relocating, there were fears the Eagles could do the same.
Owner Jeffrey Lurie was non-committal on his team’s future in Philadelphia when asked about the location of a potential new-stadium, sparking fears of a move.
“Whatever’s best for the fans,” Lurie previously said.
“We’re not really (going) on a geographical basis. It’s whatever’s best for the fans. I can’t tell you where (Cleveland’s new stadium) is, Barcelona is, I don’t know. It’s just, honestly, the bottom line is whatever is best for the fans.”

Pennsylvania Governor adamant Eagles aren’t going anywhere
However, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has assured fans that the Eagles relocating across state lines won’t be happening.
“Here’s what I can tell you for sure: It’s going to be in the city of Philadelphia,” Shapiro said, via The Athletic.
“And we’ll work with the Eagles once they determine what it is that they’re interested in doing. But I appreciate the thoughtful and deliberative approach that they’ve taken to this process.”
The Eagles have emailed season ticket holders: “Help Shape the Future Eagles Stadium Experience!”
The email explained they were considering future changes, including both renovation options and the possibility of a brand new stadium.
Lurie said in March that the franchise is in an “exploratory” phase.
This involves researching stadiums both in the United States and around the world, studying both new construction and renovations.
“The Eagles organization is thinking about what they want for the future, and we know that the future is going to be here in Philadelphia,” Shapiro continued.
“They’re going to think about what they want as a home for the next 30, 40, 50 years, and then we’ll have a conversation when they’re ready to have it.”
Lurie is hoping that after a year or two of research, they can go to the city with a much more definitive plan.
A new stadium could potentially include a roof, which would put Philadelphia in contention for hosting events like the Super Bowl.
