ESPN proposes Kyrie Irving, Paul George trades to help Pistons take next step
The Detroit Pistons are still sifting through the rubble of their brutal Game 7 playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round. The Pistons went up 2-0 in that series, but ultimately, the team’s lack of shot creation and perimeter firepower around Cade Cunningham proved to be too much to overcome.
The Pistons have what figures to be a busy offseason ahead of them, and recently, ESPN concocted a couple of trades that would help Detroit take the next step.
The first would see the Pistons land point guard Kyrie Irving from the Dallas Mavericks, giving up Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland, Caris LeVert, and their 2026 first-round pick in the process.
Irving missed the entire 2025-26 season as he rehabbed an ACL tear, but the last time we saw him on the court, he was playing some excellent basketball for the Mavericks, despite his age and physical limitations as a small guard. Taking a swing on the former All-Star could be a risk worth taking for a Pistons team that desperately needs another shot creator to pair with Cunningham.
ESPN also floated the idea of Detroit trading for Philadelphia 76ers wing Paul George and a future first round pick, giving up Stewart, LeVert, and Duncan Robinson for the former MVP candidate.
George largely played well in the first round of the playoffs this year against the Boston Celtics before flaming out in round two against the New York Knicks, and would give Cunningham a reliable isolation scorer and spot-up shooter on the wing.
It’s unclear how much George has left in the tank, but the proposition of adding both him and a future first-round pick might be too good for Detroit’s brass to pass up.
