Devils’ Martin Brodeur remembers Claude Lemieux’s ‘big heart’ after passing
The hockey world is still reeling from the shocking news of the passing of former four-time Stanley Cup-winning forward Claude Lemieux, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 60.
Amidst an outpouring of tributes from around the hockey world from many of his former teammates and even those who played against him, one particular former New Jersey Devils teammate in Martin Brodeur, took the time to remember Lemieux’s “big heart” from their two separate stints together.
“It’s only been 36 hours, and obviously, it leaves a big hole in the Devils community, and for myself, having played with Claude for lots of years, won two Stanley Cups with him,” Brodeur said via Sportsnet on X. “It’s kind of surreal a little bit. We took time to get to 12 hours yesterday to get all of our team from 1995 and some from 2000 to get together on a group text and talk about Claude’s life, and what he meant for us. It’s something as a hockey player, you don’t deal with too often, but when it comes so close, it doesn’t just affect you personally, but those around you.”
“I think Claude, everyone who knows him as a hockey player, almost as a villain, but he had a big heart.”
"He had such a big heart."

Brodeur and Lemieux won the Stanley Cup as teammates with the Devils in 1995 and 2000. Lemieux, who was also from Montreal, as is Brodeur, also won the Cup in 1986 with the Montreal Canadiens and 10 years later in 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche. Lemieux still ranks ninth all-time in NHL history with 80 postseason goals. He later became an NHLPA-certified player agent.
