Yankees rumors: New York planning unsurprising Brian Cashman decision

While the New York Yankees are busy wrapping up the 2026 campaign, the organization has some decisions to make regarding the front office. Brian Cashman is in the final year of his contract, and rumors suggest the club is on the verge of doing the obvious.

The buzz in the rumor mill suggest the Yankees are planning to bring the 59-year-old general manager back for next year and beyond, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Although there has been noise from the fanbase to move on from Cashman, the franchise appears to be on the verge of extending Cashman, as the team is in the middle of a 29th winning season with him in the GM role.

“Yankees GM Brian Cashman’s contract is up, and yes, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be extended again,” Heyman wrote. “This may disappoint some ring-thirsty Yankees fans, but his 29th straight winning season is secure. And that ain’t easy.”

The Yankees initially promoted Cashman to general manager back in 1998 when he was just 30 years old. New York went on to win three-straight World Series with Brian Cashman leading the front office (1998, 1999, 2000). The club won a fourth title with Cashman as general manager in 2009.

Despite the Yankees remaining competitive all these years, the team has failed to win another championship since that 2009 season. The World Series dry spell has been a gripe for Cashman, as it’s the reason why part of the fanbase likely won’t be happy when the organization seemingly gives him an extension.

It’s not entirely clear when that deal could come to fruition, but based on Heyman’s claims, fans shouldn’t be shocked when it’s announced. In the meantime, the Yankees will continue playing the 2026 campaign. New York begins a four-game series against AL East rival the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
