Al Michaels takes shot at Donald Trump over insane Lake Ontario vs. Lake America fixation

During the preseason game between the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots, announcer Al Michaels took a shot at President Donald Trump‘s hope to change Lake Ontario to Lake America amid his trade dispute with Canada.

At one point in the broadcast, Lake Erie was shown. Michaels only acknowledged it as Lake Erie before taking a shot at the president’s conversation about another lake’s name.

“That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie… We’re not quite sure at this point,” he said. “But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I’m talking about… Read the news.”

For those unaware, President Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. Clearly, Michaels wasn’t amused by his antics.

It was an interesting night for Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit. They talked extensively about Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was accused of sexual misconduct and assault by over 20 women. They appeared to rationalize some of his actions, such as calling out fans for being “disrespectful” for booing him.

Michaels painted Watson as a once-great quarterback who was salvaging his career, downplaying his off-field controversies by saying he’s trying to “save a career that right now looks like it’s bottomed out.” Michaels doubled down by saying, “He’s got a chance to bounce back.”

Herbstreit agreed with Michaels’ assessment, defending Watson for his press conference moment. He explained that the quarterback “kind of lost his cool.”

“He kind of lost his cool after that game in Buffalo. If you put yourself on the field, and you think about — you’re in your home stadium, and obviously, it’s been a disaster, but you can see how a guy can lose his cool and say something like that,” Herbstreit said about Watson’s comments.
