Red Sox agree to contract with ex-Mets catcher

The Boston Red Sox and veteran catcher Tomas Nido are reportedly in agreement on a contract. It is a minor league deal for Nido. Nick John of Talk Sox first reported the news.

The Red Sox are in the American League Wild Card conversation at the moment. They are expecting to have a number of injured players return soon. This is a Red Sox team that has performed especially well in recent months and they are only getting stronger. The Nido signing provides the ball club with even more roster depth.

Nido, 32, began his MLB career with the New York Mets in 2017. He would remain in New York until 2024 before later joining the Chicago Cubs. The veteran catcher last appeared in an MLB game with the Detroit Tigers during the 2025 campaign. He began the 2026 season at the Triple-A level in the Tigers organization but was released in July.

Nido does not offer much offensive prowess, as he is a career .215 hitter with a .559 OPS. With that being said, he has big league experience and understands what it requires to handle a pitching staff.

It is worth mentioning that Boston already features respectable catching depth. Adley Rutschman, who the Red Sox acquired at the MLB trade deadline, is the starter at the position. Connor Wong and Mickey Gasper are other catching options on the roster.

Nevertheless, having too much catching depth is never an issue. Perhaps Tomas Nido will end up making an impact at the big league level at some point.
