Oilers make intriguing coaching hire ahead of 2026-27 season

Last month, the Edmonton Oilers hired Mike Babcock to be their newest head coach. The Oilers 2026-27 season will rest on how he does, and how the coaching staff guides the players. With Babcock on board, Edmonton has made another coaching hire, according to Oilers.com.

“We are excited to have Misha (Donskov) join our coaching staff. We believe his wealth of experience, people skills and professionalism will make our group better. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our staff, players and the Oilers organization,” Babcock told Oilers.com.

Donskov will act as a coaching consultant. Ultimately, he will only appear at home for a few select days a month for the Oilers. Donskov will also continue to serve as Hockey Canada’s Vice President of Hockey Operations. Likewise, he will continue to serve as the head coach for the National Men’s team.

Donskov has NHL experience as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars from 2023 to 2025. Prior to that, he spent seven seasons as the Director of Hockey Operations with the Vegas Golden Knights. Before that, he was a team consultant with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Atlanta Thrashers, as well as an assistant coach with the London Knights and Ottawa 67s.

With Babcock managing the top talent in Edmonton, the team will have another experienced voice. As the Oilers attempt to win the Stanley Cup, they will go all out to ensure it happens. Donskov will bring over 20 years of combined experience to give the Oilers all the help they need. Ultimately, as the Oilers attempt to keep Connor McDavid, the pressure will be on the team to perform at the level many believe they are capable of.
