College football rumors: Pat McAfee’s alleged beef with ESPN producer at forefront of ‘College GameDay’ change

The college football season is finally here, as Week 0 kicks off the new campaign on Saturday, August 29. However, with the season about to begin, it appears ESPN has made a big change with its “College GameDay” program with rumors potentially linking Pat McAfee to the decision.

It’s said that ESPN is removing Jim Gaiero from “College GameDay” as a lead producer, according to Drew Lerner of the Awful Announcing. While there are several narratives regarding the decision, the one that stands out is the alleged beef between Gaiero and McAfee.

“One of the lead producers of ESPN’s flagship college football program, ‘College GameDay’, has been taken off the show,” Lerner wrote. “Jim Gaiero, a veteran ESPN producer who has served as a lead producer on ‘College GameDay’ for 10 years, will no longer produce the show, multiple sources confirm to Awful Announcing. Matthew Garrett, a vice president of production at ESPN, is expected to take over as executive producer of ‘GameDay’.

“Following publication of the story, Awful Announcing has learned of competing narratives as to why Gaiero was removed from ‘GameDay,'” Lerner continued… “Those who spoke to Awful Announcing believed that, at the very least, friction with Pat McAfee was factored into the decision, pointing to comments McAfee made on social media in October of 2025.”

The “competing narratives” Lerner mentions are that ESPN is giving Gaiero a different role altogether, as he will lead the program’s production prep for Super Bowl 61. It is said Gaiero will play a major factor in ESPN’s golf strategy moving forward, and he will also command Thursday night college football games as a producer. If anything, it sounds like Gaiero got a promotion.

Despite that, the timing of the decision is what is sparking rumors, as Awful Announcing’s sources claim decision-makers at ESPN typically do not operate like this. Those sources believe the incident when Pat McAfee voiced his displeasure about unnamed ESPN producers on social media back in October 2025 as the reason for the change. At least that’s what sources speculated to Lerner and Awful Announcing.

“Those who spoke to Awful Announcing believed that, at the very least, friction with Pat McAfee was factored into the decision, pointing to comments McAfee made on social media in October of 2025,” Lerner wrote.

The decision to remove Jim Gaiero from “College GameDay” is reportedly not sitting well with former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. It’s said that Saban has a close relationship with Gaiero and he is not happy with ESPN’s decision.

“College GameDay” will air on September 5 for Week 1 of the season. Pat McAfee and the crew will host the show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the Clemson Tigers-LSU Tigers game.
