Ty Simpson’s preseason performance brings out intense debate among experts, fans

Los Angeles Rams rookie Ty Simpson turned heads in the preseason with his impressive performances in three games, helping the team to a 3-0 record.

Despite already having superstar Matthew Stafford as quarterback, the Rams selected Simpson with the No. 13 pick in April, which came as a surprise to many. But it looks like the team made the right call in picking the former Alabama standout.

Simpson threw 47-of-60 for 382 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in the preseason, showcasing his efficiency and high IQ. He had a 109.9 passer rating.

Several analysts, including NFL Network’s Manti Te’o and ESPN’s Chase Daniel, heaped praise on the 23-year-old newcomer.

“The young man has taken care of the football, he’s been productive, and I think he’s surprised a lot of people,” said Teo.

“He’s been really, really sharp. The poise, accuracy, and command of the offense have stood out every time he’s been on the field,” observed Daniel.

Some fans, however, were not as high on Simpson, noting how he largely leaned on short passes and nothing downfield.

“I mean, yeah, strong showing, but it’s clearly the preseason,” said @Michaeloptv.

“That completion rate is elite, but three TDs in 60 attempts suggests he’s playing it safe. Did he take any shots downfield?” asked @Web3__Youth.

“No, he’s been a total checkdown merchant,” wrote @LARamilyMan.

“Bunch of checkdowns, and a playoff team. Put him on the (Cleveland) Browns or (Las Vegas) Raiders and see what he’d do!” posted @SavageRaider100.

“I’ll never be impressed by anyone averaging less than 10 yards per completion,” commented @BlueberryGerb.

Rams coach Sean McVay said they are still choosing between Simpson and Stetson Bennett for the backup role behind Stafford.

Bennett went 23-of-37 for 219 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions in two games in the preseason. He is in his fourth year with the Rams.

Simpson said he is staying in the moment and soaking up all the knowledge he can get in his rookie campaign.
