Newcastle make bombshell decision on Nick Woltemade just one year after record transfer
Newcastle are actively seeking to offload Nick Woltemade before the window shuts, talkSPORT understands.
The Magpies’ club-record signing endured a difficult first season at St. James’ Park, and could now depart after just a year at the club.
Woltemade completed a club-record £69million move from Stuttgart last summer, but managed just eight Premier League goals in his debut campaign.
His struggles saw him face some stinging criticism, including being branded the worst signing in Premier League history.
With Matthias Jaissle since taking charge of Newcastle, there has been speculation over whether Woltemade would be given a second chance this term.
The forward was an unused substitute in the Magpies’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool on the Premier League’s opening weekend.
Although Woltemade was handed a start in the Carabao Cup against West Brom on Wednesday, he failed to score in a 3-2 home win.
Moving on?
It now appears that Woltemade is not part of the long-term plans at St James’ Park, with Newcastle keen to move him on.
The Germany international may already have options to consider, with Napoli reportedly among those keen.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Serie A giants recently made contact with Newcastle regarding Woltemade’s availability.
Discussions had taken place this week between the two clubs, the report adds.
And now, with the Magpies seemingly clear in their desire to sell Woltemade, it remains to be seen if Napoli will step up their pursuit of the attacker.
The Serie A side are also considering a potential deal for Chelsea’s Marc Guiu.
Their plans to sign a new centre-forward follows Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Fenerbahce earlier this month, which left Rasmus Hojlund shouldering goalscoring responsibilities.
Napoli might not be the only Italian side who could consider a move for Woltemade.
European football expert Andy Brassell recently tipped Cesc Fabregas’ Como to offer the 24-year-old a lifeline.
With the Serie A side gearing up for their first-ever Champions League campaign, Brassell insisted Woltemade would be a welcome addition to their forward line, give new permanent signing Alvaro Morata‘s struggles on loan last term.
He told talkSPORT: “If we’re looking for a value loan of a player who could still become elite level.
“I think that’s an interesting one for Como to look at if they could make something work.”
Woltemade’s Newcastle career
As mentioned, Woltemade struggled to make his mark in his debut season in English football.
Despite a disappointing goalscoring record overall, the German started off well – scoring four goals in his first five Premier League games.
But he then suffered a dip in form, and went on to score just four more league goals last term, only one of which came in 2026.
Should he leave Tyneside after just a year in the north east, Woltemade will depart having made 51 appearances overall, scoring 11 goals.
