Chris Beard, Ole Miss add NBA Summer League center amid court eligibility ruling

The college basketball landscape is currently in a state of disarray as various court rulings and updated conference policies have created an inconsistent standard when it comes to college basketball eligibility across the nation for the class of 2022. One player who maintained a fifth year of eligibility amid the craziness is big man Micah Handlogten who recently committed to Ole Miss via the transfer portal, as per Joe Tipton of On3.

Micah Handlogten had initially entered the transfer portal at the end of last season, and thus, his pathway to eligibility for Ole Miss this upcoming season might a little more smooth. The SEC is one of the athletic conferences looking to potentially bar fifth-year transfers from competing this season.

The son of former NBA player Ben, Handlogten recently played in NBA Summer League for the Utah Jazz. He did not sign an Exhibit 10 contract which is another thing potentially working in his favor when determining eligibility.

He appeared in a total of three summer league games with the Jazz, one in Salt Lake City and two in Las Vegas. He averaged 3.3 points and 5.7 rebounds with splits of 100 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line in a little over five minutes per game.

Handlogten began his college basketball career at Marshall, playing one season for the Thundering Herd before transferring to Florida where he played for three seasons. He was a part of the Gators’ 2025 national championship team.

Prior to committing to Ole Miss, he was coming off a solid year for the Gators, appearing in 34 games, including two starts, at a little over 14 minutes per game. He averaged 4.1 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 63.7 percent from the field. He holds a college career average of 64.6 percent shooting from the field.
