Darius Acuff Jr. makes ‘superstar’ guarantee while addressing defensive critisisms

Darius Acuff Jr. knows what he can bring to the table for an NBA team. Following a historic season at Arkansas, the freshman phenom says he’ll change the fortunes of whatever franchise selects him in the 2026 NBA Draft.

“Definitely a superstar point guard,” Acuff said of what he’ll bring to his next team. “[I’ll] bring a lot of excitement to any city I go to… A lot of accolades, for sure. But just being on a winning team. It starts with the point guard.”

Acuff solidified himself as one of the most talented offensive guards in this year’s draft class during his freshman campaign. He dominated as a three-level scorer, averaging 23.5 points while shooting 59.7 percent at the rim, 40.1 percent on long twos and 44.0 percent from three (9.0 attempts per 100 possessions) this season. His playmaking poise was equally impressive, as he averaged 7.3 assists and 2.5 turnovers per game (2.97 ast/to ratio).

Acuff was among the nation’s top postseason performers. He averaged 29.8 points and 6.5 assists on .451/.450/.850 shooting splits across six tournament appearances, leading Arkansas to an SEC Championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Can Darius Acuff Jr. be franchise-changing selection for NBA team?

AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer and Caleb Wilson are overwhelming favorites to be the top four picks in some order. However, Acuff’s could offer an offensive engine for the Los Angeles Clippers (No. 5), Brooklyn Nets (No. 6) or Sacramento Kings (No. 7). While his offensive prowess screams star upside, his lack of size (6-foot-2 barefoot) and defensive struggles have raised questions about his viability as a franchise centerpiece.

Acuff was a defensive liability for Arkansas this season, with his effort often lacking. His supporters will point to his heavy offensive workload, as well as his stocky frame and 6-foot-7 wingspan, as reasons for optimism. Does he feel those factors will quell concerns about his long-term defensive outlook?

“To be honest with you, I don’t really care,” Acuff said. “People are going to always have an opinion, no matter what. So I just kind of stay [with] how I feel about the game… I don’t really got nothing to say to it. I know I want to play defense. So I don’t really respond to it. I’m just trying to do whatever I need for my team. I do feel like I need to pick up my defense. So I’m gonna do it.”

Undersized guards who struggle defensively have become risky selections in an NBA that prioritizes positional versatility more than ever before. Such prospects have to reach steep offensive heights to have a net positive impact.

Acuff has outlier offensive potential. Damian Lillard was among his closest physical comparisons from past combine measurements. While Lillard has yet to win a title, he’s earned nine All-Star selections and led the Portland Trail Blazers to the Western Conference Finals in 2018-19.

Acuff said Lillard is the NBA player he studies most.

“I watch a lot of film on Dame,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I steal his moves, but I kind of try to watch his game and study him a little bit. I’d say that’s kind of my comp a little bit. [Our] shot creation is kind of the same.”

John Calipari recently warned NBA teams about passing on Acuff.

“Pass on him, you’ll regret it,” the Arkansas head coach told ESPN Andscape’s Marc J. Spears. “I said it about [Tyrese] Maxey. I’ve said it about a bunch of guys. I said it about Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander]: ‘You’re going to regret passing on this kid.’ And I know there are other good players, but this kid [Acuff] is unique.”

ClutchPoints projects the Kings to select Acuff at No. 7 in its latest mock draft. ESPN and The Athletic each project the Nets to select Acuff at No. 6, while Bleacher Report has him going to the Clippers at No. 5.
