Jamie O’Hara: Wrexham would walk the Scottish Premiership, Celtic and Rangers are Championship level

Celtic and Rangers can disregard competing in the Premier League – they’re not good enough for the English top flight.

That’s according to Jamie O’Hara who, in comparison, believes that Wrexham would storm their way to the Scottish Premiership title.

Scottish football has long been dominated by Glaswegian rivals Celtic and Rangers given they’ve won a combined 111 league titles.

Both clubs have also been successful in Europe, especially Celtic, who became the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967.

Their statuses as Scottish juggernauts has led to many fans question whether or not they could stand firm in arguably the best league in world football – the Premier League.

However, ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder O’Hara has shut down any hope of them doing so by saying they’re Championship quality at best.

“They’d get relegated out of the Premier League, if they were in the Premier League now,” he declared on talkSPORT Drive.

Darren Bent agreed, before adding: “But if you put them in the Prem and gave them the finances that Premier League clubs…

“They’d be able to spend money because they’ve got huge fan bases all over the world.”

Bent then asked what division Celtic and Rangers would suit, to which O’Hara replied: “Championship, League One. I wouldn’t put them in League Two because they’re better than that… maybe the Championship.”

“You take those two teams out of Scottish football, and it’s ruined,” Bent added: “I wouldn’t mind a year watching them in the FA Cup, though, just to see (how well they would do).

But O’Hara insisted that Wrexham would knock both out of the competition, which led to an interesting question from his co-host.

“Do you think Wrexham would go up to the Scottish league and win it?” Bent asked.

“Oh absolutely, absolutely. Yeah, they’d walk it,” O’Hara confirmed. “Wrexham would walk Scottish football, they would.”

O’Hara then explained how a gulf in finances would play a major role in Celtic and Rangers being unable to be the Premier League’s best.

For example, Liverpool completed the most expensive signing in Premier League history last summer when Alexander Isak joined from Newcastle United for £125million.

On the other hand, the Scottish Premiership’s equivalent is just £12m, which is when Rangers bought Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea in 2000.

“And that’s not disrespect,” O’Hara added. “They just would because the money’s not there for them to be able to (compete)…

“Celtic and Rangers, if you gave them four or five seasons playing in the English league, they’d become giants.”

Bent disagreed, but O’Hara stuck to his word and backs Wrexham to hypothetically win the Scottish Premiership.

The Red Dragons are one of the favourites to earn promotion to the Premier League from the Championship in the 2026/27 campaign.

Wrexham came narrowly close to reaching the top tier last season, but finished seventh and two points outside the play-offs.

However, they could be set to benefit from a new format that makes its debut in the Championship this season.

The teams that finish from third to eighth will enter the play-offs, so six teams will compete instead of four.
