Cristiano Ronaldo’s son gets Portugal national team call, but there’s a catch

Like father, like son. After dominating international soccer leagues and clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo currently finds himself as an integral part of the Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr FC.

At 41-years-old, Ronaldo is still one of the best strikers in soccer and is a heavy favorite to play and captain Portugal this year at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, with still weeks left for the World Cup, Ronaldo’s son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. has now received a National team call-up for Portugal U-16.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Tuesday that the 15-year-old has been selected as one of 22 players for the U-16 national team. They will participate in the UEFA Development Tournament, which is scheduled to take place in northern Portugal from May 19th to 24th. Similar to his father, the youngster is already on his journey to carve his own path.

Cristiano Jr. will join the UEFA Development Tournament, competing against Greece, Italy, and the Czech Republic in Bragança, a city near the Spanish border known for hosting promising young European talent. This participation adds to his other appearances and contributions with the U-16 team, where he is steadily starting to establish himself. So far, Ronaldo Jr. has played six matches and scored one goal, and is a heavy favorite to lift trophies like his father.

Already played soccer at the big stage multiple times, Ronaldo Jr. played the Algarve International Tournament last February and the Confederations Cup, held last October in Turkey. He has also represented the Portugal U-15 team.
