Chris Antonetti drops brutally honest admission on Guardians pitcher upsetting expectations

Ahead of the Cleveland Guardians starting a series against the Athletics on Friday night, the team’s president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti, took time to talk about pitcher Parker Messick. As Messick has been catching the attention of Guardians’ fans, Antonetti has some comments about the 25-year-old that should excite any follower.

Antonetti would appear on MLB Network and was asked if he expected this hot start from Messick, who, in his second season in Cleveland, is starting with a 1.73 ERA to go along with 38 strikeouts and a 3-0 record. While he would admit that it is outstanding how Messick is playing, he isn’t shocked that he’s successful.

“Well, it’s hard to say that you expect anyone coming to the major leagues to have an ERA below two for an extended period, because we have a great appreciation for how hard it is to succeed and make that transition from the minor leagues to the major leagues. But it does not surprise me that Parker has been successful,” Antonetti said.

Guardians’ Parker Messick not satisfied, despite great start

While Messick looks to continue this hot start to his sophomore season, as the 1.73 ERA is currently the fourth-best in the entire majors, Antonetti goes into the traits he saw from the 25-year-old as soon as he joined the team. Another point that he expresses, which should scare other teams, is that Messick “is not satisfied” with where he is currently,

“He is from the day he joined the organization, he has had this relentless desire to find ways to continue to improve and take advantage of every resource organizationally to do that, and he’s put in a ton of work to get to this point,” Antonetti said. “And the fun thing to think about is Parker is not satisfied with where he is right now, he’s continuing to think about how does he grow and continue to get better as, you know, he progresses through the league.”

At any rate, Messick’s next scheduled start is Sunday against the Athletics, trying to build off his six prior starts with the Guardians.
