Chiefs unveil first official look at new $3bn stadium across state lines as fans slam, ‘domed monstrosity’

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially unveiled renderings of their proposed new stadium.

The Chiefs announced their plans to vacate their iconic Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri and move across state lines into Kansas back in December 2025 .

There, the four-time Super Bowl champion have plans to build a $3 billion state-of-the-art domed stadium in Wyandotte County, which would allow them to host year-round events.

On Wednesday, they revealed their first official renderings of what they plan their new home to look like, with a proposed opening date of sometime in 2031.

Alongside some of the new images of the new stadium, Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said, “It honors the rich legacy of this franchise while setting a bold course for the future of Chiefs Kingdom.

The team is working with Kansas-based MANICA and HNTB on the project, who won the design competition against Populous to be the lead architect.

MANICA has also been working on the Tennessee Titans‘ new Nissan Stadium in Nashville, and also was the mastermind behind the construction of the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium.

But some fans are not happy with the Chiefs’ proposed new look, which appears to adopt the best parts of Arrowhead, only with a roof.

“Is it just me or are all these NFL stadiums looking identical?,” one user wrote on X.

“The league continues to move toward every team having an uninspired carbon copy dome. Temu Arrowhead. Great job Clark,” a second wrote.

“A dome is so lame just to get a few events where people will only go to select parts of the city. Posting the L now!” a third added.

“They trade an icon like Arrowhead for another generic glass domed monstrosity with less seating. What an embarrassment,” a fourth wrote.

Breaking down the numbers

The stadium build is part of a $4.5 billion capital investment project, which features three additional project elements including a $300 million practice facility and headquarters in Olathe, Kan..

The other two are private real estate development areas totalling a cost of $1.2 billion.

However, with completion expected by 2031, predictions have been made that they could bring upward of $1.5 billion in direct, indirect and induced impact on the surrounding metro area annually.

Furthermore, this project is expected to bring in 8,500 full-time equivalent jobs each year, as well as $833.9 million in annual employee compensation.

With the project also predicting that the new stadium could attract over 1 million visitors yearly, the Chiefs predict $67 million in annual tax revenue for Kansas.

Amid fears of moving across state lines, including that of the Chiefs losing the home advantage that has seen them win three Super Bowls in the last six years, team president Mark Donovan highlighted the rewards of what the move could bring.

“Since Lamar Hunt relocated the team from Dallas to Kansas City in 1963, the franchise has continued to drive significant economic, cultural, and community impact throughout Chiefs Kingdom,” he said.

“This once-in-a-generation project – which is really four projects in one – offers a truly transformational impact for the State of Kansas and the entire Kansas City region.

“This project has real short-term and long-term benefits, and we are excited about what we will be building together over the next five years and beyond.”
