West Virginia d-lineman carted off field with season-threatening lower-body injury

The West Virginia Mountaineers earned a 31-24 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. While a victory appears to be on the horizon, the program may have lost a key defensive lineman for the season due to injury.

Darius Wiley, a redshirt sophomore, was carted off the field in the second half after sustaining a serious right knee injury, according to Spencer Ripchik of the Dominion Post. While the severity of the injury is currently unknown, reactions from those who saw the injury claim Wiley’s knee was twisted in the wrong direction after the play.

Wiley finished the day with three tackles. The 6-foot-6 268 lbs defensive lineman appeared to be playing a prominent role for West Virginia on Saturday. The plan was for him to serve as a key rotational option for the Mountaineers this season behind starting defensive end Zeke Durham-Campbell.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez and the program will likely have more information regarding Wiley’s status well after the contest against Coastal Carolina. With the Kentucky native facing a potentially season-ending injury, West Virginia may have to turn to Emerson Joy as the main backup defensive end moving forward.

Darius Wiley was acquired by the Mountaineers through the transfer portal this offseason. He comes from Hutchinson Community College, as this season was his first opportunity to play for a D-I program. He now awaits an official status from West Virginia’s medical team and doctors.

While fans await more information about Wiley’s injury, West Virginia as a team will have to eventually shift attention to Week 2 of the season. After taking down the Chanticleers, the Mountaineers are set to face off against the UT Martin Skyhawks on September 12.
